The government regulation index is a comparative measure of the actions of the state that deny religious freedoms including any actions that impinge on the practice, profession, or selection of religion. A higher GRI score indicates greater religious regulation.

The Government Regulation of Religion Index (GRI) is calculated by obtaining the sum of the variables and multiplying that sum by 5/3; GRI values have a possible range of 0 to 10.
