TOTAL18620.891.41
328) The Nebraska Environmental Trust is a program of the state of Nebraska that awards grants to preserve, protect, and enhance the natural environment of Nebraska. Anyone -- citizens, organizations, communities, farmers and businesses -- can apply for funding to protect habitat, water quality and improve recycling in Nebraska. Projects must provide long-lasting benefits to the general public and cannot implement regulations or government mandates. The Trust has funded more than 600 projects in every part of the state. Thousands of acres of land have been improved and preserved as habitat for wildlife by public agencies and private landowners. Every major river and nearly 100 lakes have benefited through projects to protect fish habitat and water quality. Dozens of local recycling programs have benefited from new equipment and marketing resources. All of this has been accomplished very efficiently, with only 2% of the budget going to cover operations and personnel costs. But, there is much more to be done. For every dollar that the Nebraska Environmental Trust has been able to grant, another five dollars is turned away due to lack of funds. (NET3B)
