Summary

This survey was the fifth in the Project Canada adult surveys. Begun in 1975, Project Canada has generated extensive information on life in Canada, with specific attention given to social issues, intergroup relations, and religion. The project has taken representative samples of Canadians every five years, creating panel studies through which social change and stability can be monitored.

The ARDA has added six additional variables to the original data set to enhance the users' experience on our site.

Collection Procedures

Carried out by mail between April 1995 and August 1995, the 1995 questionnaire-as with Project Canada 1975, Project Canada 1980, Project Canada 1985 and Project Canada 1990-was constructed to provide comprehensive data pertaining to three main subject areas being investigated: social issues, intergroup relations, and religion. To monitor change, many of the items in the 1975, 1980, 1985 and 1990 versions were included in the questionnaire, with new items added to clarify the earlier findings, as well as to update the content more generally. Length: 20 pages; variables: about 400; completion time: 1-2.5 hours.

Follow-up procedures were the same as used in 1985 and 1990. Approximately two to three weeks after the initial mailing, the pre-paid postcard - functioning as a reminder and asking about the status of the questionnaire - was sent, followed about three weeks later by a second copy of the questionnaire, with "Second Request" stamped on its cover letter. In the fall of 1995, participants were sent a thank-you postcard, informing them how the results were being disseminated and welcoming further inquiries. The 236 individuals who had been part of all five surveys also were sent complimentary copies of The Bibby Report (Toronto: Stoddart, 1995).

Project Canada 1995 comprised a sample of 400 people who had participated since 1975, 41 since 1980, 159 from 1985, and 216 from 1990. This ongoing core of 816 respondents was supplemented by 949 new participants, to form a total sample of 1,765 people. Together with Project Canada 1975, Project Canada 1980, Project Canada 1985 and Project Canada 1990, this survey provides 1975-80-85-90-95 trend and panel data.

Sampling Procedures

The effort to locate the 1,472 people who had participated in the 1990 survey began in the spring of 1995 and continued into the summer. It appears that 1,030 of the "PC90" respondents were located (70%), with 652 (63%) submitting usable questionnaires. In short, almost 50% of the 1990 sample participated in the new sample. They included 236 respondents who had participated in all five of the surveys. The majority of past participants were contacted in early April, although the search for 1975 participants continued throughout the duration of the project.

In an effort to increase the 1975-95 panel size, a concerted effort was made - with the assistance of enhanced (if pre-Internet search engine) CD-ROM-assisted telephone tracking - to locate additional individuals who had participated in 1975 but had been "lost" between 1975 and 1990. As a result of these efforts, some 400 "leads" were identified and mailed questionnaires. A total of 265 (66%) returned questionnaires, with 164 matches and 101 not. The former were added to the 1975-95 panel, raising its size to 400. The latter were added to the sample of new respondents for 1995.

Based on previous survey experiences, a projected required supplemental sample of about 1,800 cases was drawn in the spring, which, when combined with the core from 1990, would produce a final sample of adequate size and sufficient representativeness to permit high accuracy generalizations to the Canadian population. As before, Canada was stratified by province and community size (Greater than 100,000, 99,999-10,000, less than 10,000), and the overall sample drawn proportionate to the national population, with 228 communities involved. Participants were randomly selected using telephone directories. As in 1980 and 1985, it was anticipated that weighting according to provincial and community size, as well as gender, would be required, with age weighting required since the ongoing cores would have aged anywhere from five to twenty years.

We estimated it was possible for 1,350 of the "new 1995 sample" to return the questionnaire, with 848 (63%) doing so. The data collection covered four months.

The final national sample comprised 1,765 cases-400 from 1975, 41 from 1980, 159 from 1985, 216 from 1990, 101 non-1975 matches, and 848 totally new additions. These responses from 2,780 contacts (1,030 from 1990, 1,350 in 1995, 400 leads for 1975) represent a combined return rate for the ongoing cores and new participants of 64%.

These 1,765 cases have been weighted for provincial and community size, along with gender and age. To minimize the use of large weight factors, the sample again was reduced to 1,239 cases.

So weighted, the sample is highly representative of the Canadian population. A representative sample of this size should be accurate within about four percentage points on most items, 19 times in 20 similar surveys.
