Adoniram Judson was a Congregational missionary who traveled to India in 1812 on behalf of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM). In preparing to meet Baptists in Serampur, India, Judson and his wife began to study the Bible regarding the practice of adult baptism and subsequently shifted toward a Baptist perspective. As a result, they broke off from ABCFM and formed the American Baptist Foreign Mission Society. When they faced resistance in India, the Judsons went to Rangoon, Burma in 1813. Here, Adoniram Judson learned Burmese, preached in the local language and eventually translated the entire Bible into Burmese. Despite imprisonment during an England-Burma war in 1824, Judson remained devoted to his mission. According to his son’s biography of him, Judson baptized more than 7,000 Burmese and tribal people, established 63 churches and directed 163 missionaries. His work in Burma inspired the Protestant foreign mission movement.
