Publication of Encyclical Pascendi Dominici Gregis - Timeline Event

Founder

Pope Pius X

Time Period

09-08-1907

Description

In some respects, the pontificate of Pius X represents the height of the “Prisoner of the Vatican” papacy, which reached back to the loss of the Papal States and the declaration of papal infallibility at the First Vatican Council during the pontificate of Pius IX. Not long after Leo XIII’s condemnation of Americanism in the 1899 encyclical Testem Benevolentiae Nostrae and Pius X’s attack on Modernist biblical interpretation in the 1907 document Lamentabili Sane Exitu, Pius X issued the 1907 encyclical Pascendi Dominici Gregis, which classified Modernism as "the synthesis of all heresies." Pascendi was followed by the introduction of an anti-Modernist oath in 1910, which was required to be sworn by all priests and theologians of the Catholic Church. Together, these served to halt any further development of alleged Modernism in Catholic theology for several decades.
