Schlafly, Phyllis - Timeline Biography

Time Period

08-15-1924 - 09-05-2016

Description

Phyllis Schlafly (1924-2016) played a pivotal role in mobilizing the pro-life and Christian religious right movements. As a Catholic mother of six children, she opposed "killing another human being" through abortion and countered the growing influence of second-wave feminism.

She became politically involved in various conservative causes, including founding and chairing the National Republican Coalition for Life as well as preventing the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment in the late 1970s/early 1980s.

As an active Catholic, she often attempted to engage fellow Catholics in politically conservative causes. Besides mobilizing Catholic women in her pro-life rallies, Schlafly co-founded the Cardinal Mindszenty Society in 1958 in order to warn other Catholics of the external threat of communism. She also criticized perceived feminist rhetoric in a proposed pastoral letter from the U.S. .bishops in 1988.

After a polarizing political career, she died in 2016.
