Cabrini, Frances Xavier - Timeline Biography

Time Period

07-15-1850 - 12-22-1917

Description

Frances Xavier Cabrini was born in Lombardy, Italy, in 1850. She took religious vows in 1877. In 1880, Cabrini helped to found the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, which was devoted to the founding of various Catholic institutions for children. She moved to New York in 1889 at the request of that city’s Archbishop Michael Corrigan to assist in ministering to the multitude of new Italian immigrants arriving in the United States. The work of Mother Cabrini and the Missionary Sisters quickly spread beyond New York. They established mission schools in Chicago, New Orleans, Santa Monica, Scranton, and Seattle, as well as Argentina, France, and Spain. She died in 1917 and in 1946 became the first American citizen to be named a saint by the Catholic Church.
